The 4Cs Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight are the globally recognized standards used to evaluate a diamond’s quality and beauty. Every diamond, whether natural or lab grown, is graded using these same criteria by leading gemological institutes.

Each “C” plays an important role, but Cut is widely considered the most impactful. It determines how well a diamond reflects light and ultimately, how brilliant it appears. A diamond can have excellent color and clarity, but without a well executed cut, its sparkle will fall flat.

Below, we break down each of the 4Cs to help you understand what truly matters when choosing your diamond.

THE CUT

The Sparkle Factor

Cut does not refer to a diamond’s shape (round, oval, pear, etc.). It refers to how precisely the stone’s facets are proportioned and angled the craftsmanship that determines how light travels through the diamond and reflects back to the eye.

A beautifully cut diamond maximizes brilliance, fire, and scintillation, often appearing brighter and more lively than a larger stone with inferior proportions.

At Gilded, our diamonds are selected within carefully considered cut grades to ensure exceptional brilliance and light performance.

THE COLOR

How White Is It, Really?

White diamonds naturally contain subtle variations in color, typically appearing as warmth or tint. Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light color).

  • D–F: Colorless (rare and highly prized)
  • G–J: Near-colorless (bright, balanced, and visually stunning)
  • K–Z: Increasing warmth, often noticeable to the eye

At Gilded, we curate diamond color ranges intentionally balancing brightness, beauty, and value across both natural and lab grown stones.

This approach allows customers to choose a diamond that looks radiant on the hand, without feeling pressured to select grades that don’t align with their priorities.

THE CLARITY

What You Don’t See Matters

Clarity refers to the presence of natural characteristics known as inclusions (internal) and blemishes (surface level). Most diamonds contain these features, and the vast majority are microscopic.

Gilded diamonds are selected to meet eye-clean standards, meaning no visible imperfections to the naked eye during everyday wear.

Any clarity characteristics typically require 10x magnification to detect ensuring a diamond that looks clean, bright, and beautiful without paying a premium for technical perfection that isn’t visible in real life.

THE WEIGHT

Why Weight Isn’t Everything

Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not its visual size. Different shapes distribute weight differently an oval, pear, or marquise diamond may appear larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight.

This is why carat should always be considered alongside cut. A smaller, well-cut diamond can appear brighter and more impressive than a heavier diamond with weaker proportions.

At Gilded, both natural and lab grown diamonds are curated to offer a range of carat options allowing customers to balance size, brilliance, and budget based on what matters most to them.

THE SHAPE

The Style of the Stone

Shape isn’t part of the grading scale, but it’s one of the most personal choices you’ll make. It reflects your style, energy, and how you want your diamond to feel on the hand.

The round brilliant remains the most popular shape for its unmatched sparkle, while shapes like oval, emerald, pear, cushion, and marquise continue to rise in popularity for their distinctive silhouettes and personality.

There’s no wrong choice only the one that feels most you.

THE GILDED APPROACH

At Gilded, we believe diamond education should feel clear, honest, and empowering never overwhelming or biased.

Whether you’re drawn to the natural history of a diamond formed over time or the precision of one created through modern innovation, the 4Cs give you the tools to choose confidently.
